Log Cabin Escape is a true get-away. Recharge, rejuvenate, reconnect and relax! Nestled in the woods on 20 acres of prairieland with nothing around you, you would never guess that you're just a short drive from big cities: McKinney is an hour, Dallas is an hour and a half, Fort Worth is two hours. Our proximity makes a spontaneous decision to get away from it all very doable!

Stay in an original log cabin tucked away among tall trees in the quiet country of Oklahoma. Twenty acres of natural prairie with a quarter mile long driveway with cows next door, plenty of deer exploring the property, ducks in the ponds and a wide array of birds scrounging for the corn the deers missed! Great location right off Highway 69/75, 20 minutes to Choctaw, 30 minutes to Lake Texoma.

QUIET

That’s what we hear most from our guests. They love the peaceful sounds of nature, which are often lost in the busy ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ world we live in. Stay awhile and take in the sweet sounds of birds, watch the butterflies and hummingbirds bounce from flower petals, grab your coffee and take a seat on the front porch where you will enjoy the breezes blowing in across the 90-acre pasture next door and, if you’re up early, you will have the joy of watching the cows meander in. The front porch is also a great spot to sit quietly and watch the deer congregate at the feeder. At night, sit out at the firepit with your glass of wine and listen to the frogs and bugs, and an occasional donkey, turkey or chicken! With no city lights to dilute them, the stars are so bright!

ABOUT the cabin

All the different woods used in the cabin create a warm and cozy feeling. The cabin was hand-crafted using logs taken from the land. Friends and neighbors helped strip the cedar logs and hunt down the stones for the 2-story fireplace and curved front walkway. The center part of the cabin is original - you can sit in every chair in the cabin and discover something charming, unique or unusual – like the rough cut marks on the logs showing it was all done by hand. It’s perfectly imperfect!

The HISTORY

We are still uncovering this unique cabin’s history, but so far this is what we know. . . The cabin was built by hand. Originally, it had no running water or electricity and it was the owner’s full time home. The owners cooked and heated using a wood stove – seen in pictures we have. Originally, the cabin had a second floor with bedrooms. It also had a rooftop sitting area where the owners and friends would hang out and watch the stars.

The FIRE

Sometime in the late 80s or early 90s, the parents went away for the 4th of July weekend. The son(s) decided to throw a party while the parents were away. A friend came to the door with a lit cigarette in his mouth. The owner’s son chastised the friend and said, “You know my mom would kill you if she saw you with that cigarette in here.” To which, the smoker, took the cigarette and casually flicked it outside… landing in a box of firecrackers… in 20 minutes the cabin was a raging inferno.

And, that fire is why we don’t allow smoking or flammable ANYTHING in the cabin or outside near the cabin.

REBUILDING

After the fire, it was rebuilt with the same old school methods – taking trees from the land, stripping the bark, and hand-hewn craftsmanship. Then, sadly, the owner’s experienced health issues and moved away to be closer to health providers, thereby abandoning the log cabin for decades. Nature took it back. Neighbors describe it as looking like a haunted house – dark and hidden by the overgrowth of vines and trees. Inside, birds and wild animals made themselves at home!

REMODELING

In 2018, brave souls decided to bring it back to its original glory. They first had to cut back a thick blanket of overgrowth of vines and trees just to get near the cabin. Once inside, they cleared out the birds and wildlife, power washed and began to slowly bring it back to habitable. They did an amazing job of blending the old with the new – using repurposed pallet wood in the guest bath, the dining room ceiling is from an old local church, logs that needed replacement or repair were created by cutting down trees and stripping the logs – just like the original owners did.

The 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and laundry were added to the main cabin during the remodel - and offer all the modern amenities – granite counters, double sinks in bathrooms, huge walk-in showers with massaging stone floors, tall ceilings, and hardwoods.

COZY, COMFIE, QUIET

It is perfect for a romantic getaway where you can focus on you without all the distractions. Enjoy comfy king beds with luxurious linens and room darkening shades to relax, recharge, rejuvenate and reconnect. It’s just the right size for a girls/friends getaway or a memorable family staycation with good old fashioned fun to keep you busy and to make memories.

Between the noise canceling thick logs, room darkening shades, and comfortable beds, you may sleep-in like never before! When you do muster the energy to start your day, a fully equipped kitchen awaits with pretty much everything you need to cook. If you choose to grill, there’s a gas grill and utensils on the side porch. Grab a beer and take a seat in one of the Adirondack chairs at the firepit while your dinner cooks on the grill and enjoy the view of the next door 90-acre pasture.

The layout of the cabin consists of a spacious kitchen with long granite counters and 5 bar stools for your guests to join you as you prep a meal, a deep kitchen sink, triple filtered reverse osmosis drinking water on tap, a full-size refrigerator/freezer, electric stove/oven, microwave, and convenient island for prepping. The dining room table seats 6 with the best views in the cabin – you can watch the deer at the feeder from your seat. There’s a cool, retro drink fridge in the dining room for your beers, wine, water. The living room boasts a stunning two-story stone fireplace with wood burning stove, comfortable, reclining leather seating for 6, shuffleboard and darts, and access to the back yard deck. On the left side of the cabin is a huge guest bath with granite counters, double sink, and a huge shower with a massaging stone shower floor. Next to the guest bath, there is a bedroom with a King bed, TV, and direct access to the guest bath. The laundry room is at the end of the hall. On the right side of the cabin is the master bedroom with a King bed, 55” smart TV, attached master bath complete with original deep soaking clawfoot tub that everyone falls in love with, granite counters, double sinks, huge walk-in shower with a massaging stone floor. A 3rd bedroom is also on the right with a King size bed and TV.

Consider the cabin as your home away from home. We’ve tried to think of everything to make your visit as comfortable as possible. Please enjoy the televisions, board games, books, snacks, coffee and tea. And remember: the kitchen is fully equipped, so bring your food and get your cooking on!

In the summer it is HOT outside, but we have AC and overhead fans. We’ve also placed moveable fans on the front and back porches to move air while you sit out there.

No electronics needed to entertain you out here: play basketball on our half court – even in the dark – we have glow in the dark basketballs, play shuffleboard, darts, jenga, cornhole, volleyball, horseshoes, tether ball and frisbee golf, and an assortment of board games! Who needs to leave the site with all that fun right here!

There is NO baby/toddler/child-proofing in the cabin, so please proceed with caution if you decide to bring the littles. We have a pack and play and a high chair.

We are out in the woods. It is full of trees and dry grasses. Fire is a very real hazard. NO SMOKING or use of ANYTHING FLAMMABLE in the cabin. There’s a firepit where you may smoke since the ground is covered in stone. Thank you for protecting our cabin and our natural setting from fire. Oklahoma is a MMJ state - and we are cannabis friendly - just do it at the firepit. :D

We have allowed guests to bring well behaved dogs. The cabin is deep cleaned after every guest, however, if you are highly allergic to dogs having been in the cabin previously, this may not be a good fit for you. Due to owner’s allergies, cats are never allowed

Guests have access to the entire cabin minus a few locked owner’s closets.

Please be sure to read through the House Manual upon check-in. It will help you make the most of your stay, as well as remind you of a few requests we make to keep you and our home in good shape.

If you have any suggestions for how we can make this amazing place even better, we'd love to hear from you. Please leave us a note at the house or private message us. And of course, if you run into any issues during your stay, do not hesitate to contact us. We are on-site but out-of-site so it’s easy for us to help you.

About the Owner

We bought this getaway as our 'escape' from the city life in Dallas. Nancy moved to Dallas in 1984 and has lived in NE Dallas/Lake Highlands since 1995. Seth moved to Texas from Colorado, where he lived on acreage, so this property felt like home to him. We have grown kids and envisioned this as THE meeting place for our beautiful blended family. We wanted enough land to be able to explore nature, stare at the stars at night, and not hear all the sirens and horns in the city! It NEVER was in our plans to BnB this property. However, as people visited, they fell in love with the uniqueness of the cabin and everyone wanted to rent it so they could share it with their friends/family. The cabin is still THE place for our family to visit, but we are thrilled to share this unique property with others, as there really is nothing like it - between it being a REAL log cabin with a cool history, and situated remotely with deer, cows, donkeys, frogs, birds and more as neighbors, this is genuinely a great escape from city life, yet a super easy trip to get here from the city!
This is not a 'destination cabin' like those at Broken Bow offering adventures, attractions, stores and restaurants nearby. This cabin is a true get-a-way in nature. Bring your food and supplies as the nearest store is 15 minutes away in Durant. Choctaw Casino is 20 minutes away. Lake Texoma is only 20 minutes away. There are rivers nearby for hiking/exploring.
