The Hosts

Seth & Nancy

We moved from Dallas. We were itching to get out of the busy city life and as soon as we crested the hill and saw the breathtaking setting of the cabin down below, we knew we were blessed to find this little slice of heaven. We say it, and we hear it over and over again, the pictures just don’t do it justice.

It was never our intention to share our beautiful log cabin home, but after persistent requests, we decided to offer this unique home to guests who genuinely seek the unparalleled experience of staying in a cozy and rugged, yet luxurious, hand-made log cabin set smack dab in the middle 20 beautiful acres of prairie land. It's just a lovely, visceral change from the hustle and bustle we all blindly operate in on a daily basis in the cities or suburbia.

When we decided to share the cabin, we moved into the cozy cottage- lovingly known as Grace’s place, named after Nancy’s treasured grandmother. Not soon thereafter, we got requests to rent that space. This cozy cottage is packed full of charm and perfect for those seeking a smaller, yet delightful escape. It boasts a kitchenet and bathroom, so it really is the perfect find for someone wanting a more intimate option. We’ve found this is also the perfect hide away should there be a large party and part of the group wants to retire early, or family with young kids wants private and separate living quarters.

Now, we live in a delightful house at the top of the property. We really have the ideal set up. We’re a phone call away should a guest have a question or need something. But, 20 acres is a lot of land, especially when you’re used to city living, so we won’t be stepping on your toes if you’re seeking a private experience. That being said we love meeting our guests and making new friends, so should you need something, don’t hesitate to reach out.

We’ve lived in our personal oasis for many years now. We often visiting Dallas as some of our kids live there. It is quite remarkable how quiet it is here. You can’t help but notice when you’re used to the noise pollution of city living. No sirens, car horns, or traffic out here. You might hear the wildlife- we’ve got chickens on the property that provide you with farm fresh eggs, but there’s also cows, donkeys and horses nearby. You’ll often hear coyotes howling at night.

The best way to describe the log cabin is it is Perfectly Imperfect. It was created by hand, by the family that lived here. It's not from a kit. It's from blood, sweat and tears! We love all of the imperfections! Discover axe marks in the logs, old insect trails in the logs they harvested, a stunning two-story stone fireplace crafted from Oklahoma stones found right on the land. Electric and plumbing were only recently added when the brave remodelers took the log cabin back from nature and the animal gangs that called it home.

Cabin History

What we’ve been told...

THE LAND:

The property land is sacred to the Choctaw as it is just 1/4 mile away from the big battle between the Choctaw and Caddo Indians for area hunting rights. The Caddo were not considered warriors like the Choctaw. The Choctaw were valiant in the bloody battle. To honor the land, we were told the Indians threw a tomahawk into a tornado to protect the land. Curiously, we have watched wickedly scary storm getting close, as we take cover, only to have the storm pass right over us!

THE ORGINAL:

Built by hand by a family, with everyone pitching in, the cabin originally had no running water or electricity. They used a stove to heat the cabin and to cook. When the family lived in it, the cabin had a second floor with bedrooms. It also had a rooftop sitting area where the owners and friends would hang out and watch the stars.

THE FIRE:

Sometime in the late 80s or early 90s while the parents were away, their son(s) threw a party. Sadly, the cabin caught fire and within 20 minutes, it was a raging inferno. It’s out in the country, so it takes quite a while for emergency services to arrive.

That devastating fire is why we don’t allow any smoking or anything flammable inside or near the cabin.

Eventually the cabin was rebuilt and turned into the luxurious haven it is today!

With 20 acres of natural land and two busy bees, there is always plenty to do!

From feeding the fish, preparing for guests, stocking the pond, feeding the chickens, rescuing dumped animals, burn piles, feeding the deer & endless yardwork. The list goes on!

As we settled into country life, we learned that countryside is where many abandoned animals are found. We’ve become foster parents caring for many animals as they transition to a loving and permanent home.
